2016 Elections Update Schedule

Election Day was just the beginning!

The post-election period — from November to January (and often into the spring) — is marked by constant activity as newly elected officials transition into their new roles and build out their new offices. The Leadership Directories content team is at their busiest, seeking out and confirming the latest news to update Leadership® Online each day with post-election developments.

The 2016 Elections Schedule provides a chronological breakdown of the key post-election events for each segment of the US government, so you know exactly what the new officials will be doing, what the LDI content team will be updating, and what new information will be available on Leadership® Online each day.

Presidential Election

  • November 8, 2016: Presidential election is held.
    • Results for races called after 2:00 A.M. appear in Leadership® Online two days later.

  • November 10, 2016: Donald Trump appears as President-elect in Leadership® Online.
    • A note in the Elections section indicates which candidate won and which candidates lost.
    • Presidential transition begins.
      • Federal Team begins building the transition team into the Executive Office of the President listing. Much of the campaign staff often enters official roles in the President-elect’s transition office.
      • Address of transition headquarters and contact info will be added.

  • November 23, 2016: Federal Team begins confirming new appointed officials. 

  • November 2016 - January 2017: President-elect Donald Trump will announce multiple nominations to high level positions in his new administration.
    • Federal Team contacts high-level Obama administration officials to verify who will act in those roles during the transition period and also the early stages of the new President’s regime. 
      • These are usually career civil servants filling higher level roles on an interim basis. 
      • Changes appear in Leadership Online the next day after the Federal Team confirms information.

  • January 20th, 2017: Presidential Inauguration
    • The President-elect status is changed to reflect the newly sworn in President Trump formally taking the Oath of office of the President of the United States.
    • New cabinet should be confirmed.
    • The Federal Team removes all Obama administration officials from Leadership Online unless they’ve been asked to stay on in the new administration.
    • Federal Team will continue to research who will act in appointed roles until new President’s officials are nominated and confirmed.

  • January 2017 (and beyond): Continued updates as they occur
    • Federal Team continues to track new officials in the new administration and update the myriad other changes that will be occurring at the federal executive level after a new President takes office.

  • November 8, 2016: General election.
    • Elections Team content managers work tirelessly to make all necessary database updates.
    • Results for races called after 2:00 A.M. appear in Leadership® Online two days later.
  • November 9, 2016
    • Challengers who win appear as Senator-elect or Representative-elect in Leadership Online.
    • All winners have been tagged with the "Member of the 115th Congress" job function.
    • Additional notes and job function codes help subscribers find and track election results.
  • November 2016: Leadership elections.
    • All changes in leadership will be reflected in Leadership Online the day following confirmation.
  • Late November / Early December 2016: Senate temporary room assignments announced.

  • December 15, 2016: New House Room assignments available around this date.

  • November 2016 - Early January 2017: New top level staffers for the 115th Congress announced.
    (Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, Press Secretary, etc…)

  • January 3, 2017: 115th Congress seated.

  • Early January 2017: Committee Assignments should be released. Subcommittee assignments will not yet be known in full, but confirmed memberships will be updated immediately.

  • Early February 2017: Full Congressional subcommittee assignments should be released.

  • Early March 2017: Official new Senate room assignments should be released.

  • November 8, 2016: States hold their general elections.
    • Elections Team content managers track gubernatorial and constitutional officer races and make all necessary database updates. Results for races called after 2:00 A.M. appear in Leadership® Online two days later.
    • 12 states and two territories will hold gubernatorial elections.
    • Eight gubernatorial races do not have an incumbent running- three are leaning Democrat, two are leaning Republican, and three are tossups.

  • November 9, 2016: Gubernatorial and constitutional officer election results are available.

  • November 8-13, 2016: Gubernatorial transition begins. 
    • Elections Team builds gubernatorial transition teams into State profiles.
    • State legislature results start being entered November 9, 2016, and all state legislatures are updated by Sunday, November 13th.
  • November 14-30, 2016: State Team begins updating biographical profiles for gubernatorial winners and state constitutional officer winners.

  • January 2017
    • State Team begins updating states as their legislatures convene and executive administrations begin.  These dates are different state-to-state.  The team sticks to a firm schedule and updates information the day before legislatures are seated or executive branch officials take office in order so that the newly seated officials’ status is reflected accurately on the day they officially take their new office. 
  • February 2017 (and beyond): Continued updates as they occur.
    • State Team updates committee assignments and leadership appointments at all state legislatures as they are announced
    • State Team adds communications and career info for all newly elected legislators.

  • November 8, 2016: Most local municipalities hold their general elections.

  • November 9, 2016: Municipal Team begins updating local elections results.

  • November 13, 2016: All municipal election results should be available in Leadership Online.

  • November 14-28, 2016: Municipal Team double-confirms we properly list each mayor and county executive.

  • January 2017 (and beyond): Municipal Team updates city and county officials’ status as their new local governments meet for the first time in 2017.

  • November 8, 2016: States hold their general judicial elections.

  • November 17, 2016: All judicial election results should be available.

  • January 2017 (and beyond): Continued updates as they occur.
    • New judges are sworn in and updated.
    • New chambers’ staffers are researched and added to our database.
