Elisabeth “Betsy” DeVos – Secretary of Education

History was made on February 7, 2017 when the Senate confirmed Betsy DeVos as education secretary after a tie-breaking vote cast by Vice President Mike Pence. This is the first time a vice president was required to go to the Capitol to break a tie on a cabinet nomination. After her confirmation hearing in front of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME) voiced their concerns about her lack of knowledge with federal laws protecting children with special needs and disabilities. Murkowski said that DeVos is, “so immersed in the push for vouchers, she may be unaware of what actually is successful within the public schools, and also what is broken and how to fix them.”  After a heavy debate, the two Republicans decided to vote against the nominee. The vote in the Senate came to a standstill at 50 to 50, which in turn led to the deciding vote by Vice President Pence.  View profile ↓

United States Department of Transportation – Office of the Secretary

On Tuesday, January 31, 2017, Elaine Chao was sworn in as secretary of transportation following a Senate confirmation vote of 93 to 6. The vote would have most likely been unanimous in her favor, but President Trump’s controversial travel ban resulted in six Democrats voting against her. Chao was the first Asian-American woman to hold a Cabinet position and is also the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. She previously served as secretary of labor in President George W. Bush’s administration, as well as director of the Peace Corps from 1991 to 1992. As secretary of transportation, Chao will be in charge of making key decisions on how to regulate the growing use of drones and automobile manufacturers’ plans to offer self-driving cars.
