Supreme Court Gains 113th Justice

Supreme Court Justice Neil M. Gorsuch

On April 7, 2017, the United States Senate confirmed Neil M. Gorsuch to the Supreme Court of the United States and he was officially sworn in as the 113th justice on April 10, 2017. The addition of Justice Gorsuch fills the vacancy created in February of last year due to the death of the late Justice Antonin Scalia and puts the Court back to operating with all nine seats on the bench filled. First Female Republican Chief Justice in Alabama

Alabama Supreme Court

On April 25, 2017, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey appointed Associate Justice Lyn Stuart as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. The appointment was announced after former Chief Justice Roy Moore resigned to run for U.S. Congress, which led to Chief Justice Stuart making history as the first female Republican chief justice in the state of Alabama. Justice Stuart had been serving as acting chief justice due to the suspension of former Justice Moore. Governor Ivey has not yet announced who will fill the vacancy on the court. View profile ↓

 

Former Chief of Staff Joins Firm as a Principal

Todd Novascone

Todd Novascone, previously the chief of staff to Senator Jerry Moran for the past 12 years, joined Ogilvy Government Relations as a principal. Before his long stint as chief of staff, Novascone served as a Kansas state representative from 2000 to 2005 and then went on to help run Moran’s successful Senate race in 2010. Robert Wexler

Ballard Partners, Inc. hired former Rep. Robert Wexler as senior counsellor of international affairs, based in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining the firm, Wexler spent 13 years in Congress before resigning to become president of the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace, a position he’ll continue to hold while working at Ballard. Throughout his tenure in Congress, Wexler served on a plethora of committees and caucuses, including chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe (Committee on Foreign Affairs). Description: The Supreme Court consists of a chief justice and eight associate justices who are elected in statewide partisan elections for six-year terms. Vacancies are filled on an interim basis by the Governor. The Supreme Court has general supervisory authority over all courts in the state and the authority to review any judgment of any other court in the state. The Court has exclusive appellate jurisdiction in actions involving title to or possession of land, in civil cases when the amount exceeds $50,000 and in all appeals involving utility rates approved by the Alabama Public Service Commission. The Court may review decisions of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals or the Court of Civil Appeals, as well as all decisions involving capital cases.
